Someplace in Switzerland (Zermatt, maybe?) has tried out your auto ban. Everything, even tour buses, has to stop a ways out of town. Then you ride a little train of golf-cart-sized vehicles into the center.
'Course, the streets of the place are so narrow that more than one car would block them anyway. ;)
