Geoff mentioned this race which I had nearly forgotten about.
First ever socialist elected to US Senate : He is also the only non Republican/Democrat *elected* to the Senate since the parties were created. He ran as an Independent against a rich opponent (Democrats gave up on nominating someone), and SLAUGHTERED him in the race.

Whoo hoo! I do recall being annoyed by some position Senator Sanders supported, but the details have faded in the mists of my mind.
Stayed up entirely too late watching election returns, and my eyeballs are a little crunchy this morning.
