Brett Chidester

I probably shouldn't allow myself to write comments before I finish imbibing my first pot of espresso. Unfortunately, most mornings that's the only free time I have to sit at my desk.

Anyway, Brett Chidester's family seems to have discovered this entry...

I have nothing but sympathy for Mr. Chidester's family. I disagree with them about salvia prohibition but understand their actions.

It sounds like the poor guy used salvia quite often. That in itself strikes me as problematic. Much as I like experimenting with this minty plant mentor, I can't imbibe more than once every four or five months, and would never recommend doing so to others.

If somebody drinks fifteen shots of vodka and drives off a bridge I don't think we should rush out and ban vodka (and my old man is an alcoholic who drank himself out of a fat inheritance and into the local Y).

I'll say it again--those bastards who market salvia to youth as a means of achieving a good high are the problem. Their marketing should be limited, just as we bar ads that market cigarettes and booze. Don't ban the plant.

Exactly my point- there are plenty of substances that reasonable adults consume frequently. Banning each and every one because of one spottily sourced causation is an over-reaction.

As far as advertising goes, my friend's 17 year old kid had tried salvia already. Is he mentally prepared yet? Probably not, but the marketing and breathless hype re: s. div. is certainly part of the problem.
