The white cross that hung from the Pacific Garden Mission in the South Loop and proclaimed "Jesus Saves" in blinking red neon lights for at least 50 years was removed today, destined for a perch atop the shelter's new building about 1.5 miles away. The 15-by-10 foot cross was installed sometime after the mission bought the four-story red brick building at State Street and Balbo Avenue in the 1950s, said Phil Kwiatkowski, mission vice president. The mission is moving to 1458 S. Canal St. to make way for an expansion of nearby Jones College Prep high school.
