Another fragmented movie review from my film-moleskin.
A young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) and his grandmother spend vacation time together in a seaside town. Little did they know their hotel houses some very unusual and rather scary guests: witches. They're in town for a convention to listen to the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) unveil her master plan to turn all children into mice. Will Luke fall victim to the witches' plot? [From Netflix: The Witches]
Nicolas Roeg must have been hard-up for cash. Any viewer of this movie needs to be in some form of altered consciousness as well, and even then only the absurdity is worth watching. Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson), Angelica Houston, and some others. I only managed to watch about 30 minutes in total. Horrible.
Obviously this reviewer prefers anodyne soulless crap with burger and toy deals that Hollywood puts out every summer. The Witches is deliciously dark, spooky fun. It really captures Roald Dahl's spirit - which EVERY other Dahl adaptation has thus so far failed to do. Nicolas Roeg is not for everyone - but he is one of Britain's great filmmakers for proper film lovers. If you don't believe children should be patronised and treated like morons then I highly recommend The Witches.
Umm, this reviewer (me) does not prefer anodyne films, sorry. I prefer films that don't suck. I have no children in the house, so I'm reacting as an adult to a film, i.e., am not concerned if children are patronized or not. Click the link 'film' above to see the sorts of films I like, not many soulless marketing vehicles are celebrated there.
And for the record, I've seen and liked several other Nicolas Roeg films (Walkabout, Man Who Fell to Earth, Don't Look Now). The Witches is not on the same level. You are welcome to like or not like any movie, but there isn't a need to personally insult others who don't share your taste.
