The biggest problem with this is that material in landfills doesn't biodegrade. I remember a Nova or similar PBS show from a few years ago where a team took the equivalent of "core" samples in some of the oldest landfills. They came up with perfectly preserved newspapers from the 1940s and 1950s.

But of course, for all the plastic trash bags blowing around outside of landfills this is good news. :)
