A (better) photo of my delicious Manhattan

Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, Angostura bitters, Cinzano “Rosso” vermouth
shaken over ice cubes for 20 seconds before pouring into a cocktail glass. And slurped down.

Screw that funky (music white boy) cherry thing. No seriously, Maraschino Cherries are not part of my everyday repertoire.

I probably shouldn’t have made a third one1, but this week2 has been exceptionally stressful, and I need a bit of a respite from worrying about situations I cannot completely control the outcome of.

Footnotes:
  1. but they were so damn delicious!! []
  2. actually, this entire month []

Hubbard Street and something.

Finally made a Flickr set to group all the Street Art photos I’ve taken in one place.

What is Street Art? By my loosy-goosey definition, simply art I’ve discovered that isn’t in a gallery. Most of it is graffiti art, and semi-permanent as well, but that isn’t a requirement.

Reading Around on February 3rd through February 6th

A few interesting links collected February 3rd through February 6th:

  • Flash Crash! – If you are reading this from a browser using Adobe’s Flash Player plug-in (i.e., if you see a blue rectangle below), it will probably crash within the next few seconds. 🙁
  • If Global Warming Is Real Then Why Is It Cold – editorial cartoonists are not scientists, in other words
  • Spirits: Long-lost Gin Buck gets most bang from ginger beer – The gin buck? Three ingredients, no matter the variation. You can try the “modern” version: gin, lemon juice and ginger ale, which gives the drink a mellow lemon-lime flavor. Or, substitute the lemon with a half-lime squeeze, rimming the glass with the pulp to make it extra tart. Either way, it’s fizzier than a gin gimlet, and sweeter that a straight gin and tonic.

But to really do it right, you’ll want to go retro and spice it up with ginger beer, which, unlike today’s ginger ale, actually tastes of ginger. That’s how they made it in the old days: gin, authentic ginger ale (that actually tasted like ginger, so to get that flavor today, we’d use ginger beer) and lime juice, over ice cubes. The ginger and juniper flavors interact intensely.

Family Planning protest w 50 foot Giant Virgin Mary

I only had a 70 mm zoom lens when I shot this, so this is a little hard to see, but it looks like a giant Virgin Mary statue is being set up to glare across the street at the family planning clinic on 659 W Washington. By the looks of the police barricades, I’d say a bevy of protesters is going to greet any woman unlucky enough to have an appointment today. I’d go over and get a closer shot, but I’d probably get into a fist fight with the fundies. Birth control is apparently their next target, btw.

As ChicagoSage suggested in comments, we should build a 30 foot Flying Spaghetti Monster with noodley appendages next to this statue.
